What New College Grads Look For

What New College Grads Look For While wed all like to think we have a good handle on whats happening in the job market, for many of us, its been quite some time since our college graduation and what eventful years they have been Even for entry level professionals, the last 3-5 years have seen many changes for college grads, most of them described by the media as bleak. According to a May Heldrich survey just one-fifth of recent graduates of four-year colleges and universities said their generation will have mora success than the generation before them. Almost 60 percent said they will have less financial success than the previous generation. So with the majority of grads thinking the future may not be so bright, what ARE they looking for in a job?Well to start with, they want real, honest communication during the recruiting process. How do you do this? AfterCollege.com suggests dropping the borin g corporate speak and making recruiters available to speak with them outside of business hours.Todays students and recent grads are seeking authentic feedback and interactions with employers, regardless of whether this happens in-person or virtually. This fits in with what millenials or recent college grads are looking for in a job. What tops the GradStaff list? Trust. Not money in fact, compensation falls at the bottom of the list just ahead of career path.Trust- After several years of watching governments and corporations lie and cheat, college grads often choose to work at a company where they can trust their employers.Security- Not surprisingly, college grads saddled with rising student loan debt are looking for a company who can provide them consistent security.Structure/Freedom balance- This generation understands more than ever how truly mobile work can be. They require a battle plan and clear direction.Work/Life Balance- This might seem like the saatkorn thing as the above b ut it isnt. For them, the focus is on delivering a quality work product and then using their time as they see fit.Feedback/Communication- Grads want to know what theyre doing right and what theyre doing wrong. frequent course corrections can be very good for an entry level worker.Recognition- Yup, you knew this one was coming. You must recognize all your employees but for college grad this is a pretty big want.Ability to make an impact- We all want to save the world but this latest generation really wants to make an impact. They need to see that the work theyre doing affects their world positively. Keep this in mind when building your recruitment marketing.Mentoring- This is similar to the need for feedback (a productive loop that will only improve your employee relations in my opinion) but can cross hiring manager and departmental lines.Fair compensation- Now we get to it. The money. As so many astute analysts in our industry have pointed out, this is not at the top of the list AND it doesnt even refer to competitive or stellar compensation, simply fair. Simply put, college grads want to be paid for the work they do.Career path- What happens next? If your new hires dont see a career path in front of them or any place to get promoted within your organization, you can say goodbye right now.For all the talk about generational woes and perceived frustration with Generation Y, the above seems like a sensible list. What do you think? Are college grads asking for too much in a still shaky job market?

How to Choose the Right Point of View for Your Story

How to Choose the Right Point of View for Your StoryHow to Choose the Right Point of View for Your StoryThe point of view of a story is the perspective from which a story is told. Writers may choose to tell their story from one of three perspectives First personchiefly using I or weThird personchiefly using he, she, or it, which can be limited or omniscientSecond personchiefly using you and your As a writer, you must strategically choose the point of view that allows you to most effectively develop your characters and tell your story. First-Person Point of View When the author uses the pronouns I, me, myself, we, or mine to narrate a story, this piece of fiction is using the first-person point of view. Of all the ways to tell a story, this point of view is the easiest to use because the writer is in conversation with the reader, and its easy to stay in character. In this point of view, the readers experience the world vicariously through the narrator. Theadvantageof the first-per son point of view is that you can immediately connect with the reader. Thedisadvantage of using this approachis youre limiting yourself because youre writing from only one perspective. Example Herman Melvilles 1851 classic novel Moby Dick is an example of a first-person point of view perspective. The story is told from the sailor Ishmaels point of view and has one of the most famousopeninglines in literature, Call me Ishmael. The reader is immediately drawn in. Second-Person Point of View When a narrator uses the pronoun you or your to tell the story, that is a case of using the second-person point of view. The story unfolds from the perspective of an onlooker who speaks directly to the reader. For example, You went to school the other morning. Second-person point of view is rarely used because its easy for this writing style to sound gimmicky- making it the hardest point of view to use. But if you work at it, it can be done and done well. Theadvantageof second-person point of v iew is that you can engage the reader immediately. If you feel the need to immerse the reader right from the get-go, try this approach. The disadvantageis that its very hard to convey a story effectively when speaking directly to the reader. Example Jay McInerneys best-selling novel Bright Lights, Big City is an excellent example of the second-person point of view and a book you should consider reading before attempting to write from this perspective. McInerney wrote the book in the second person because the main character is unnamed, and he soughtto make the experiences and challenges of his central figure as personal as possible. Third-Person Point of View In third-person point of view, the narrator uses the pronouns he, she, they, or it to tell the story. Think of it as you (the writer) functioning as an outsider looking in at the action taking place. Third-person point of view is the most commonly used perspective because of all the options it offers. This perspective afford s the author more flexibility than the other two perspectives. If you write in this mode, you are the onlooker watching the action as it unfolds. Its as though someone was in a theatre watching a play take place with several actors. Should you choose to write from this perspective, you can write inthird-person omniscient, where the thoughts of all the characters are revealed to the reader, oryou can choose third-person limited, where the reader sees into the mind of only one character- either throughout the entire novel or in specific sections. Theadvantageof the third-person viewpoint is that the author can write from a broader perspective. Thedisadvantageis that it can be difficult to establish a connection with the reader. Example A book such as Anna Karenina could only have been written from the third-person perspective. Thats because it allowed the author, Leo Tolstoy, to be much freer with the plot than he could have been had he chosen to write in either of the two other points of view. Try a New Point of View Despite the advantage of the third person, beginning writers tend to fall back on the first person, either because its easier or they are writing about themselves. Even if your story is autobiographical, consider trying the third person. Doing this will help you view your story more dispassionately and allow you to tell it more effectively. It might also show you directions for the story you hadnt considered. When choosing between a limited and omniscient perspective, it may be easier to use third-person limited, which still adheres closely to one persons point of view. You can start with third-person limited, then, if you like, switch over to omniscient if you find you need more than one point of view to tell your story. This opportunity to switch gears should make it easier for you. If your story keeps hitting a wall, consider switching the point of view. Beginning writers may groan at the idea of rewriting an entire story, but thats how many professional writers first learned which point of view works best for them.

Say yes to your passion and no to everything else

Say yes to your passion and no to everything elseSay yes to your passion and no to everything elseHuman beings are quickly distracted by shiny objects. How often do you see that in your daily life? The world is filled with interesting things to pursue, do, or acquire. We all have something that we want at any given time.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreWe want more money, a new house, car, smartphone, travel the world, get married, write a book, start a business, get a new job, a six-pack, invest in the stock market - and preferably, we want to do everything at the saatkorn time.Thats how fruchtwein of us behave. We have an endless list of things we desire. And were bad at making decisions. The result is that we have to deal with an inner battle.I think we all know that we cant achieve everything. An thats especially true for your career. We all want to have a career that we love. We want to turn our passion into a career. But because we want it all, were not going anywhere close to that goal. One of the main things Ive learned is that more does not equal better.Limit Your ChoicesAnd yet, I constantly find myself taking on more work. Why does that happen? I think its in our nature. We always desire more than we can actually achieve. ur choices are limitless. In todays world, we can almost pick any career that we want. There are of course limitations to our capabilities. But as long as we stay within what Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger call our circle of competence, we can turn our passion into a career. But thats hard because we are quick to move out of that circle. We want to do things that are not in line with our knowledge, skills, experience, and strengths.Ive learned that this is a recipe for disaster. If you want to have a mediocre career and frustrating life, you should follow your desires. But if you want to be more calculated about your life, its be tter to limit your choices. Its basically the same idea that Peter Drucker had.He said that all successful careers are built on strengths.Watch this video to learn more about how you can figure out your dream careerFollow This Simple RuleWhen assessing career opportunities, say this to yourself If something doesnt fall within my circle of competence, I will say no to it.That drastically decreases the options for your career. The idea behind this comes from reading the classic book on choices,The Paradox of Choiceby Barry Schwartz. He saysLearning to choose is hard. Learning to choose well is harder. And learning to choose well in a world of unlimited possibilities is harder still, perhaps too hard. The lesson we can draw from his book is that more options cause brain malfunction. We simply become paralyzed when we have too many options. That means we must get better at saying no.I struggle with this all the time. I know damned well that I cant do everything. If you look at people who have achieved some sort of success in any field, youll notice that they succeeded at one thing. How many people can you think of who succeeded at more than one profession or skill? Forget about historical figures like Leonardo Da Vinci or any other genius. Most people achieve any form of success or recognition in that one field. What does that tell us? They did one thing, and they did it well.Everybody Has StrengthsI think the primary reason we suck at making choices is that we hate to miss out on all the great things life has to offer. When you pick one thing, youre also saying no to many other things. And thats a reality we cant live with. But we need to accept that and settle for what we have. We should stop thinking about all the other possibilities in the world. Barry Schwartz put it wellThe alternative to maximizing is to be a satisficer. To satisfice is to settle for something that is good enough and not worry about the possibility that there might be something better. At some po int we must stop thinking about the endless possibilities. We should accept who we are in life. The truth is that we suck at most things. And if youre passionate about those things, why not turn it into a hobby? This view of your career is extremely liberating.Instead of trying to be something youre not, youre accepting your own limitations. More importantly, youre also accepting yourstrengths. And yes, everybody has strengthsRemember to think about what you want out of your career and life. For example, I want to wake up excited to get to work. I want to do something I loveandam good at. Sometimes, you will learn to love the things you are good at. And sometimes you get good at what you love.Either way, this is your career and life. Why not make the best out of it? Dont settle for mediocrity or a frustrating career. You owe that to yourself. And yes, everybody has strengthsRemember to think about what you want out of your career and life. For example, I want to wake up excited to get to work. New study confirms this tea can cut obesity and reduce inflammation

New study confirms this tea can cut obesity and reduce inflammation New study confirms this tea can cut obesity and reduce inflammation A new study conducted on male mice published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry expounds on the fascinating relationship that our gut microbiome shares with weight gain.Gut bacteria enhances our ability to communicate with our immune system in addition to helping us produce several important vitamins. The trillions of bacteria that line our intestines determine how well we absorb nutrients from the foods we eat.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!A previous experiment conducted on rodents found that when gut bacteria from obese humans were placed inside mice, the mice began to put on significant weight. “Two-thirds of American adults are overweight or obese, and we know that just telling people to eat less and exercise more isn’t working. It’s important to establish complementary health-promoting approaches that can prevent obesity and related problems,”  says  Richard Bruno, the recent study’s lead author and professor of human nutrition at The Ohio State University Because green tea has been independently studied to encourage friendly bacteria, Bruno and his team of researches wanted to verify the previously published data as a viable method of keeping excess weight off. How green tea promotes the benefits of a healthy gut microbiome Over the course of eight weeks male mice were put into two groups (female mice were not included in the study due to their resistance to diet-induced obesity. )   One group of mice was administered a high-fat diet meant to lead to obesity, while the other group was given a regular diet. Half of each group had green tea extract mixed into their food.  The researchers then surveyed both groups based on these key factors: body and fat tissue, the extent of leaky guts, inflammation in fat tissue and intestines and the composition of gut microbes. Interestingly enough,   in addition to expressing a lower insulin resistance, less inflammation within fat tissue and the intestine boosted protection from toxic bacteria components and generally less leaky guts, the mice given the green tea supplemented high-fat diets gained 20% less weight than the mice given identical diets minus the green tea.  These positive results carried over to the mice put on regular diets supplemented with green tea extract but to a much lesser degree.“This study provides evidence that green tea encourages the growth of good gut bacteria, and that leads to a series of benefits that significantly lower the risk of obesity,” said Bruno. Many viruses, bacteria, and fungi are integral to heart health, our immune system and maintaining a healthy weight.  The antimicrobial components of green tea have a tendency to eradicate unhealthy organisms while leaving helpful ones untouched.    Bruno intends to conduct further research with human trials but currently proposes that about 10 cups of green tea throughout the day should produce similar effects. He also recommends consuming green tea in moderation with food to achieve optimal results. You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

Follow These Tips to Retain Your Top Legal Professionals

Follow These Tips to Retain Your Top Legal Professionals Follow These Tips to Retain Your Top Legal Professionals With big law firms able to offer salary hikes to their lawyers that boutique firms can't match, many people in the legal profession wonder how these smaller law firms and in-house legal teams can compete with the larger organizations to retain top talent. It's important to keep in mind that many boutique or small-to-midsize law firms have flatter operational and compensation models than their Am Law counterparts. Billing rates at these smaller firms are typically lower than standard large firm rates and, as a result, they may not be in a position to raise salaries mdash nor do they necessarily want to in order to offer their clients lower rates and continue to retain their business. On the corporate side, while some general counsel may not feel immediate pressure to increase compensation, most understand that competitive salaries and benefits are critical to attracting and retaining top legal talent long term. Many GCs take recent industry trends into account when evaluating compensation levels for their in-house associates in the months ahead. Visit the Robert Half Legal Salary Center today to help assess your compensation packages. While salary is a top factor for many job candidates, research conducted by Robert Half Legal points to non-monetary benefits as key legal retention incentives. If law firms and corporate legal departments can’t increase recent lawyer salary ranges, they may be able to offer larger bonuses and enhanced benefits. Providing attractive non-monetary perks - remote work arrangements, flexible schedules, faster paths to partnerships or management roles, and professional development opportunities - can attract top talent to smaller firms or companies and help keep legal professionals motivated and satisfied on the job. To help re-energize and retain valued legal team members, follow these five tips: 1. Offer meaningful work Providing challenging work or variety of assignments not only enhances employee job satisfaction but also serves to identify future leaders. Managers should consider ways that tasks might be reassigned to advance employees' career goals. 2. Strive for work/life balance A key cause of dissatisfaction with legal jobs is the reality of the daily grind. Long hours and high stress have spurred some legal professionals to leave their jobs and even change careers. To improve work/life balance, consider the following approaches: Mitigate burnout. Managers can’t eliminate workplace stress, but they can help their teams better manage it. Offer flexible working options if appropriate and in between major caseloads, encourage team members to take time off. But don’t just talk the talk. When managers take vacation time, it demonstrates that it’s appropriate for staff members to do likewise. And when workloads are high, consider interim legal support to help reduce pressure on the team. Make time for pro bono work. Offering free legal service to nonprofit organizations may seem counterintuitive to legal teams that are already stretched. However, pro bono work not only gives back to the community, it also adds meaning to people’s jobs and helps them feel good about their legal careers. 3. Recognize employees’ contributions Team members who receive constructive feedback and regular recognition are more motivated to stay with their organization. Review recognition strategies and step up acknowledgement of top talent: Re-evaluate compensation. While money isn't the only factor in job satisfaction, it is important and keeping lawyer salary packages competitive will help retention rates. While firms or companies may choose not to match recent associate pay hikes, managers should continue to evaluate compensation and non-monetary benefits that are prized by legal professionals. Value more than work. Get to know the strengths and interests of legal team members; work with them to align assignments with these attributes, a tactic that can help to increase both morale and productivity. 4. Be an engaged manager Workers who feel their managers are responsive, respectful and invested in their careers are more likely to remain in their jobs. Be transparent. Communicate honestly and don't leave employees in the dark when change occurs. Keep them apprised of the organization's short- and long-term goals. And give them a voice in decisions that affect them. 5. Provide development opportunities Encourage professional development; motivate staff to pursue the projects and cases that will interest them. By emphasizing ongoing education, organizations demonstrate they value and support the long-term success of their staff. Effective programs include mentoring, free CLE and online classes. To retain the best and brightest legal talent, it’s important to monitor industry developments and enhance compensation and benefits programs when needed. Industry resources such as the Robert Half Legal Salary Guide can help employers evaluate hiring trends and customize lawyer salary offers.

5 ways to tactfully turn down responsibility without appearing lazy

5 ways to tactfully turn down responsibility without appearing lazy 5 ways to tactfully turn down responsibility without appearing lazy Everyone is taking on more responsibility at work these days â€" and often without being paid for doing so. But, is there a way to keep more of your work plate without appearing lazy or not being a team player? We’ve asked work experts for their tips on how to say “no” effectively and tactfully to your boss without your image being tarnished.Be forthcoming about your workloadIf you sincerely feel that the quality of your work would suffer due to your current work overload, share this, but do it gracefully. Claudia Luiz, PsyaD, a psychoanalyst and author in Tarrytown, NY, suggests some dialogue that conveys that you really appreciate the offer of added responsibility, yet would like to devote yourself entirely your initiatives at hand. She suggests saying something like, “I am so excited about this job and I am really loving the work. I want to show you what I’m doing so you can help me balance the workload, or maybe even give some work to someone else because I would really l ike to devote myself fully to fill-in-the-blank,” Luiz says.Set reasonable boundariesWith the establishment of boundaries, which can be initiated with the simple word, “No” (even whispered to ourselves), we can politely, respectfully begin to disentangle ourselves from unrealistic expectations, says Mark Borg Jr., PhD, a psychologist and psychoanalyst and co-author of RELATIONSHIP SANITY: Creating and Maintaining Healthy Relationships.“Sometimes this begins with the simple â€" but not easy â€" process of shifting back into our work role â€" what it was that we were hired to do,” he says. One way to do this is to write down the specific tasks that are detailed in our job description, and refer to this list whenever we are tempted to take on other tasks in an attempt to gain favor from others, Borg recommends.Talk it through and don’t complainIf you want to get your point across to your boss about how overworked you feel, the best approach is to have a conversation with him /her that doesn’t involve you complaining about your job or your colleagues, says Robin Schwartz, PHR, managing partner, MFG Jobs.“If you’re taking on more work than peers at your same level, approach that subject without throwing anyone else under the bus,” says Schwartz. “We’ve all worked with people who do the bare minimum, so it’s probably not going to be surprising to your boss that you’re feeling as if your abilities are being taken advantage of.“Make sure you remind your boss that you want to be a team player and help the company achieve its goals, but you’re struggling to be able to keep up with the amount of work being handed to you.”Be prepared to “show” your workloadShow your boss what projects or tasks you have on your plate that keep you feeling as if you’re just treading water.“It may be helpful for your boss to visual the duties and projects assigned to you as opposed to others at your level,” continues Schwartz. “It may also be effec tive to keep a journal or log of your day for a week or two so your boss has better insight as to the challenges you’re facing.”Seeing how dedicated you are to your work will have your boss more willing to work with you to re-delegate certain tasks or projects.Agree to take on part of the projectJennifer Davis, PCC, CPCC, an executive leadership coach in Hopewell, NJ, says she recommends that her clients navigate challenging conversations with this creative approach.“I often encourage them â€" whether talking to their boss or simply managing their own priorities â€" to consider re-framing every ‘no’ into a ‘yes,’ and every ‘yes’ into a ‘no,’ which could work well when declining an increased workload without appearing lazy. Change the response to focus on what you do want to do, the impact you want to make, and how you truly want to prioritize your current projects vs. spreading yourself too thin by adding additional responsibilities,” she suggests.Davis also says to share your vision for your role and projects, as well as the impact they will have on your company and team.

Power suits are back and they are bigger than ever

Power suits are back and they are bigger than ever Power suits are back and they are bigger than ever The pantsuit didn’t slink away with Hillary Clinton, it just morphed and took on a new form. Now, it’s been reborn as oversized, voluminous super-power suit, worn with everything from big neon sneakers (see Tracee Ellis Ross) to the women on Killing Eve to starlets on the red carpet (see Blake Lively’s pale-pink version).Even Vogue editor Anna Wintour is inspired. “I’ve been thinking a lot about suits recently,” said the woman known for her uniform of tea dresses at last week’s Women in the World conference. “Thank you to the Duchess of Sussex!”“Obviously, [Meghan Markel’s] style is fantastic,” Wintour added. “When she went on that trip to Australia and New Zealand, she was very respectful in choosing a lot of unknown Australian designers to wear, which was great. But I think, more importantly, she’s really bringing modernity to the royal family in a way that is inspiring.”The relaxed, almost baggy fit of the newest crop of suits adds insouciance to the look, making it look more boyish than mannish. Survey finds that women think dad bods are sexy

Survey finds that women think dad bods are sexy Survey finds that women think dad bods are sexy Having a dad bod continues to have its benefits.More and more people see it as welcoming as ever after a new survey found that not only do women consider if attractive, but more than half said it was sexy for a man to have a body considered a dad bod.A survey conducted by Kelton Global interviewed Americans to get their perception on the dad body. A dad bod is considered a balance between someone who works out but isn’t exactly counting calories with weekend social activities keeping their bodies at a relative median. And that’s what women want: research found that they didn’t just find it attractive, but 62% said they thought the dad bod was sexy, a 10% rise compared to 2018.That perception has likely had a positive effect on men. Men reported their dad bods helped them increase their self-esteem. Nearly half (48%) said they have learned to accept themselves and almost the same number said having a dad bod made them less concerned with how they appeared to others. That percept ion resonates for both men and women with over three quarters (78%) reporting a man with a dad bod is a sign they are comfortable in their own skin. Some estimates  state there are nearly 28 million men with dad bods in the U.S. today.Even celebrities have embraced their dad bods in the past. Leonardo DiCaprio was once overheard at a party bragging about how he doesn’t work out to a group of models, Page Six reported. DiCaprio has been one of the poster boys of the dad bod movement with other male celebrities like Jon Hamm and Seth Rogen. The survey, which was in conjunction with fitness franchise Planet Fitness, interviewed over 2,000 Americans ages 18 and over.

How to Write a Killer Cover Letter

How to Write a Killer Cover Letter How to Write a Killer Cover Letter Youve found the perfect job, your resume is ready to go, but theres one last thing on your to-do list: the dreaded cover letter. While it might seem easy to write a one-page letter touting your  strengths, many job seekers struggle to understand what, exactly, an employer is looking for and how to translate that into a couple of paragraphs. Cover letters are unavoidable, and many employers consider them the most important part of  any job  application. As much as youd prefer to let your resume speak for itself, your cover letter is truly your chance to make the best first impression. This is your opportunity to showcase your talents, stand out  from competing candidates, and help hiring managers get to know you outside of your resume. Its time to give that cover letter the TLC it deserves. Below are a few simple tips to help you write a cover letter that lands your dream job: 1. Always Submit a Cover Letter This bit of advice might seem pretty obvious to you, but many people think cover letters are optional. Even if the job description doesnt specifically ask for one, you should still include one. Applicants who dont take the time to write a cover letter are typically seen as less motivated, and most hiring managers wont even look at an application that lacks one. Cover letters are a must! We all know the time and stress that goes into  writing one, but by going the extra mile,  you prove your interest in the job  while showing youre willing to put in the effort. 2. Dont Regurgitate Your Resume Yes,  its okay to talk about the things listed on your resume, but dont copy and paste them right from the document. Instead, elaborate on your previous experiences and highlight things that relate to the position youre applying for. A cover letter lets you put your skills into full sentences rather than just bullet points. Use this time to share additional details you werent able to squeeze onto your single-page resume and tell a story  about why youre the perfect fit for the job. 3. Dont Apologize for Skills You Dont Have This is one of the most common cover letter mistakes. For some reason, we all feel the need to apologize for our perceived shortfalls  - but why? If you dont meet all of the job requirements, dont draw attention to that fact. Instead, stay positive and focus on the skills you do have. Its better to highlight your strengths than to apologize for your weaknesses. 4. Dont Be Too Formal - Show Some Personality Remember the person receiving your cover letter is just that: a person. Spare the overly formal constructions  and put some personality into it. Reading  through  cover letters  can be exhausting, and employers often only skim them. Dare to get noticed. Make your cover letter stand out. Give employers a reason to stop and read your full letter. It just might be the thing that lands you an interview. 5. Pay Attention to the Details The smallest grammar mistake will most likely land your application in the no stack. It doesnt matter what job youre applying for; hiring managers are always looking for smart, detail-oriented individuals.  If you misspell a word or forget a comma, dont think it will go unnoticed. Be sure to proofread thoroughly your cover letter before submitting it. Consider having a colleague or friend review it as well for added security. 6. Be Yourself Last and most importantly, be yourself. There is nothing worse than someone trying to be something theyre not. If you land the interview after blatantly lying in your cover letter, the  employer is going to find out, and you wont get the job. Be confident in yourself and highlight your true strengths. An honest cover letter will go a long way. - While it can be stressful to write, a cover letter can make or break your chance of landing an interview. Be patient and give your letter the attention it needs. Youll be happy you did. The State of the Staffing Skills Gap

The State of the Staffing Skills Gap The State of the Staffing Skills Gap The State of the Staffing Skills Gap Rossheim With the unemployment rate hovering near 5 percent, the staffing skills gap is looming larger than it has in about a decade. DevOps specialists are way too few, universities are producing STEM college graduates in insufficient numbers even collections agencies cant keep all their seats filled. Despite the challenges of signing in-demand talent, successful staffing firms are successfully applying a range of hiring tactics from brute-force sourcing to new investments in training. IT and development skills continue top the list. The critical skills of software programmers and architects pose the most complex shortages in American industry. Were still seeing a lot of pressure in IT and development, says Matt Rivera, a vice president at staffing firm Yoh. Many staffing firms like Yoh have recruiters scouring job boards, social media and specialized sites like Stack Overflow and GitHub for leads on passive IT candidates who might be motivated to make a move for a better opportunity to use their niche skills. Complex technical skill sets are difficult to teach. Strategic combinations of computer and networking skills are never in sufficient supply, and theyre difficult for professionals to acquire. Collaborative IT administration, for one, is very hot but there are not a lot of good, qualified people who have the skills to do DevOps, says Rivera. Its very difficult to train in these deep technical areas. Some of our clients are training people in networking and then moving them up into DevOps. Theres a shortage of new grads with STEM skills. Skills in science, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are right up there on the shortage spectrum with technology. We see a mismatch between recruiters and college seniors, says Josh Wright, chief economist at iCIMS, which makes application tracking software. There are many more recruiters looking for STEM college graduates than there are seniors graduating in these field. In this data age, the skills to exploit numbers are in short supply. Business in the 2010s is all about data, and data scientists arent the only ones who need to know how to use it. From logistics experts to marketers, data skills continue to grow in importance across business disciplines. And one-quarter of employers reported difficulty in recruiting workers with the ability to understand and interpret data, according to the Spherion Emerging Workforce Survey. Transactional finance skills come up short. If you think that there are plenty of folks out there to fill fundamental finance and accounting roles, youre wrong. Just keeping the fiscal trains running has become a major challenge as unemployment has continued its long, gradual decline. With payroll, collections and billing, the labor force has just run out of people to do this basic work, says Stu Coleman, a partner and senior managing director at staffing firm WinterWyman. Were still getting requests from clients for recent graduates for these very transactional jobs. Jobs in the skilled trades go begging. As technology continues its takeover of factory work, skilled trades are becoming even more technical and openings are getting harder to fill. In some parts of the country, people with the skills to be machine operators and welders are retiring without enough replacements, says Sandy Mazur, a division president at staffing firm Spherion. Most communities are trying to step up to the need for training in trades, but its a tough challenge. Where are the communications, problem-solving and workplace skills? Their social-media savvy notwithstanding, Generation Zers entering the workforce often lack the soft skillssuch as communications and other interpersonal skills, recruiters say. Theres really a concern about the degree of professionalism that college students have, says Wright. In our survey, 74 percent of recruiters said that written and spoken communications were more important than college major. The survey also showed high demand for critical thinking and problem-solving skills and knowledge of how to function effectively in the workplace. Revisit retraining programs to keep them on target. To fill skills gaps, savvy companies are making an investment that serves dual purposes: training employees in mission-critical skills and retaining employees by seeing after their professional development. Weve updated all our training for our internal employees, says Mazur. We do a study every year to understand any disconnect between employers and employees. We have classes on customer service skills and how to use data to make decisions. Employees ferret out skilled friends for referral bonuses. Employers increasingly are turning to their workers to help fill the most stubborn skills gaps. Companies have always liked the idea of employee referrals, says Coleman. The difference now is that now theyre really jacking up the money, to $2,000, $3,000, $5,000. This motivates people to unearth candidates with hard-to-find skills, he says.
