How to Get Your Resume Read by Using Keyword Research Conducting adequate keyword research during your job hunt is key to ensuring your resume is read by employers. According to ERE, each job opening receives an average of 250 resumes with recruiters spending on average only 6 seconds reviewing each  application. The majority of applications are screened by a digital  Applicant Tracking System (ATS) that scan resumes for keywords to indicate a match for  a particular job. At this stage, if you haven’t used the appropriate keywords, the chances of your resume making it in front of a hiring manager dramatically decrease. Even if an organisation doesnt use automated screening software, a recruiter or a hiring manager will use a database or professional networking sites to look for potential hires. It is only by understanding their search behaviour and the language they use to look for candidates can you make your resume more visible and increase your chances of getting found on the system. Identifying the right keywords employers are looking for is the most crucial step in creating your resume. You can find keywords by looking not just at the job posting you are applying for but also at similar jobs in your area of expertise. Keyword research methods: As an example, take a marketer who is deciding whether to optimise his resume for online marketing or digital marketing. Indeed indexes a huge number of jobs online, aggregating job postings from employers and job boards alike. This means  we can use their  Job Trends tool to compare the popularity of both terms across job advertisements in the US. We can see from the results that the percentage of job postings that contain online marketing is currently on par with those that have digital marketing. However there has been a  steady  increase in the usage of digital marketing over the last few years. To get a better gauge of what the job market looks like, run a search on Indeed using the ‘With the exact phrase’ field under advanced search. Exact text matches on Indeed.com (USA) 25th April 2014: Keyword Jobs returned online marketing 6’099 digital marketing 9’072 From this we can see that there is a larger number of employers advertising for digital marketing roles compared to online marketing. Taking the growing popularity of the keyword over the last few years and the number of jobs advertised, it would be reasonable to conclude that employers will use the keyword digital marketing as they search for potential employees. If you’re a developer with HTML5 skills, what job title are employers using to find people like you? It’s not enough to rely on your skills as your primary keywords. In most cases, recruiters will use a combination of skills and job titles to narrow down their candidate pool while searching for people on databases. Since recruiters spend such a short amount of time looking at resumes, you need to make sure that you catch their attention by using job titles with the closest match to their requirements. We can use Indeed’s resume search to find out what professionals in your space are calling themselves. Using the search term HTML5 we can see that the most popular job titles among your peers are web developer, software engineer, software developer, senior software engineer and web designer. Going back to the advanced job search, enter HTML5 in the ‘With all of these words’ field and one of the job titles above in the ‘With the exact phrase’ field. Matches on Indeed.com (USA) 25th April 2014 Keyword Jobs returned HTML5 with web developer 2’131 HTML5 with software engineer 1’977 HTML5 with software developer 817 HTML5 with senior software engineer 434 HTML5 with web designer 336 It’s clear from the results that as an HTML5 developer, you should try and use web developer  at least once or twice  within your resume or online profiles to maximise your visibility to recruiters, hiring managers and search engines. Using software engineer and software developer would make sense too. A word of caution though, finding the right keywords is only half the battle. Make sure that you are using the most appropriate keywords to describe and give context to your skills. At the end of the day, stuffing your resume with keywords might get you past the ATS but it will still end up in the NO-pile if the contents do not make sense to a hiring manager.

Personal Branding Interview Ryan Holiday - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Ryan Holiday I recently spoke to Ryan Holiday, who is the author of  Trust Me, Im Lying and is a media strategist for notorious clients such as Tucker Max and Dov Charney. After dropping out of college at 19 to apprentice under Robert Greene, author of The 48 Laws of Power, he went on to advise many bestselling authors and multiplatinum musicians. He is currently the director of marketing at American Apparel, where his work is internationally known. His campaigns have been used as case studies by Twitter, YouTube, and Google and written about in AdAge, the New York Times, Gawker and Fast Company. He currently lives in New Orleans and writes at RyanHoliday.net. In this interview, Ryan talks about the medias flaws and how hes capitalized on them, how he spends his time, what got him into PR, and more. How do you manage your time between your clients and your corporate marketing position? Do you have some special flexibility program? The key is to look for opportunities that can help multiple clients at the same timeI think two birds with one stone with everything I do. My clients actually benefit from my extracurricular activities because I am always trying to make connections, introductions or suggestions. Lets say someone approaches me about an author to do an interview, before I wrap that, Im thinking how my other authors might also be a fit. How I can translate their work to fit somewhere you wouldnt have initially suspected. This overlap always me to actually be better at my job the more I take onethe thinner I am spread, the stronger I am. I realize it seems paradoxical but it has worked for me. How did you stumble upon this new way of marketing and publicizing products? What have you learned along the way? I wouldnt say I stumbled on it so much as I slowly chipped away and uncovered it. I tracked stories that I would see in the news and realize that they started on some tiny blog but eventually made their way to CNN. I watched as the media manufactured its own news for personal gain. As I discovered this interdependence and tendency, I had a thought that basically only a naive but ambitious 20 year old could have: if I could control blogs, I could indirectly control the entire media cycle. I realized I could exploit this weakness to the advantage of my clients and thats what I did. Look at Andrew Breitbart, he did the exact same thing. He realized he could steer the conversation through a set of tactics and he correct understood the medias response and inability to resist those tactics. My strategies are different, and less political, but they rely on many of the same assumptions and realities of the business. Im very pragmatic about it. I dont like it, but this is the system for better or worse, I just prefer to victimize it rather than be victimized in turn, like so many others inevitably are. What do you have lined up for your book launch. Can you mention something youve already done and something that might be coming up soon? The goal for the book marketing campaign was to PROVE the book itself. I make a lot of claims in the book about how the system works and I wanted the marketing to shine a spotlight on those accusations, to make them clearly stand out in relief against the BS rhetoric that so many bloggers and journalists delude themselves with. And I think I can say that I did that here. This book has been EVERYWHERE in the last 10 days. From the New York Post to the front page of Yahoo.com. And I did that even as the media circled their wagons and tried to ignore me or dismiss me as an aberration. People are having the discussion that I hoped we would have: that the media is defenseless, corrupted and hopeless manipulated. Its not enough to simply deny my claims now. There an overwhelming burden of proof behind them. I havent seen a single person really even try at this point, which shows me how flimsy the justification for things like HARO truly were. (Except Peter Shankman and that was mostly cringeworthy and embarrassing to watch) What are your top three tips for getting picked up by The New York Times or another major outlet? Appeal to self-Interest, Be extraordinary and Dont wait for them to come to you. If you want the Times to write about you, you better make your angle so convincing and interesting that they beat a path to your door and beg you for it. Remember the Times has to fill a huge paper and an even bigger website everyday. They WANT cool stuff to write about and they NEED to get traffic. Make it clear that writing about you fulfills those objectives and youll be shocked at how easy it is. Do you think this book will ruin your credibility with bloggers or mainstream media or enhance it and why? How can my credibility be ruined by people who dont have any? Itd be like worrying that Id hurt my reputation inside the Catholic Church by writing about the scandals they tried to cover up. I dont care what they think because THEY are the problem here. I understand that taking this onthat saying clearly that the emperor has no clothes and signing my own name to that statementisnt going to earn me a lot of friends, but Im ok with that. I was in a position to write this book precisely because I was an insider whose identity wasnt wrapped up in the game and because I didnt believe in it. Right now its the true believers and the truly corrupt who are turning on me and trying make me the bad guy. But theyll get theirs, so Im not too worried about it. What Millennials can Learn from Rules 13 and 14 - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career About the time many Millennials were just entering their teenage years, I was fortunate enough to hear one of the great generals of the United States Army speak. Im talking about Norman Schwarzkopf, also known as Stormin’ Norman” in some circles. He was a great speaker. He was engaging with practical, real-world stories. He spoke about leadership, but not as a mandate or dictate. Rather as a commitment to oneself and ones duty. He spoke for over an hour, but what stood out to me the most were two rules he mentioned. These two rules which he called Rule 13 and Rule 14 were not created by him. He related a  story about when he learned them and said that they have served him well over his entire career. And, that he had shared them with those in his command much as I am sharing them with you now. Rules 13 and 14 They are as simple as they are powerful Rule 13 When placed in command, take charge. Rule 14 Do whats right. That’s it. 9 short words with a lot of potential. Potential to make a significant impact. Potential to change lives. Potential to change the way people see you in your career. What can Millennials learn from Rules 13 and 14? Plenty. Leadership, compassion and perhaps most of all trust. Trust in the person, no matter where they fit within the organization, to follow Rules 13 and 14. Leadership is more than barking orders and expending unbending fealty. Despite being known for a hot temper, “Stormin’ Norman” was known for saying, “Leaders love their troops and let them know in many ways.” By showing compassion and trust, Stormin’ Norman was able to succeed in ways that were probably never envisioned. The same is true for you. Whether you are a Millennial or some other age group you’ll find that by putting Rules 13 and 14 into practice you will be able to get ahead in your chosen field by being more authentic and perhaps a bit more entrepreneurial too. Rules 13 and 14 will also help you stand out in your career  by making it easier to communicate more effectively. Try them today. Put Rules 13 and 14 into play on your next project. And, pass ‘em on to the team. You’ll likely be pleasantly surprised by the results.

2011 Executive Job Market Outlook According to ExecuNets  annual Executive Job Market Intelligence Report, business growth should continue through 2011 and executive recruiters are expecting double-digit growth, compared to the double-digit drop most of them experienced during the economic downturn. Significant pockets of opportunity are opening, particularly in these industries: Healthcare High Technology Clean/Green Technology Life Sciences (Pharma/Medical/Biotech) Manufacturing Financial Services/Banking/Insurance Energy/Utilities Business Services Internet/Online Services Consumer Products A total of 3,199 participants were surveyed for the report: 2,028 executives from North America, 462 executives from outside North America, 563 executive search firm consultants, and corporate human resource and talent acquisition leaders, and 146 executive search firm consultants from a companion global survey. Findings indicate that networking is still (by far) the best way to open doors to new opportunities, as shown in their breakdown of where recruiters find executive candidates: 46% â€" networking 23% â€" the firms database 11% â€" research 10% â€" searching resume databases 8% â€" online job postings 2% â€" advertising Companies report that 92 percent of their jobs with salaries at or above $200,000 per year are not posted publicly online. This trend continues to increase as companies become overwhelmed by response to advertised positions because what is published on their websites is re-published by an increasing number of job ad aggregators. Some takeaways for job seekers - Earlier this week, I was interviewed for the Career Success Radio show with Andy and Carrie Robinson. I love doing interviews, because they always inspire me to write about something that came up in the discussion. In this case, Andy and Carrie asked me for some closing thoughts for their job seeking listeners to consider. How to sum up things for a job seeker in just a few minutes? For someone who writes (and tweets) about the topic daily, its a challenge to choose just a few topics. There are jobs. If you optimize your search and your materials, the economy will not keep you from finding a job. It is easy to think that the situation is out of your control as a job seeker. However, I believe that job seekers control a lot more than they realize. I like to suggest that my clients drive their own career bus. Do not ignore the power of social networking the connections you can make online are only limited by the amount of time you have to pursue them. You may be surprised to learn that people you hardly know are willing to connect and provide you with information and contacts that are key to landing your next opportunity. Job seekers who shrug off LinkedIn and Twitter do so at their own risk. Dont underestimate the importance of a positive attitude and planning your search. Job seekers must take the reigns and be focused and purposeful. In my experience working with clients, those who plan are successful and those who leave things to chance experience a much longer than necessary search period.   Finally, its important to ensure that your job search materials are up-to-date and optimized.
