2011 Executive Job Market Outlook According to ExecuNets  annual Executive Job Market Intelligence Report, business growth should continue through 2011 and executive recruiters are expecting double-digit growth, compared to the double-digit drop most of them experienced during the economic downturn. Significant pockets of opportunity are opening, particularly in these industries: Healthcare High Technology Clean/Green Technology Life Sciences (Pharma/Medical/Biotech) Manufacturing Financial Services/Banking/Insurance Energy/Utilities Business Services Internet/Online Services Consumer Products A total of 3,199 participants were surveyed for the report: 2,028 executives from North America, 462 executives from outside North America, 563 executive search firm consultants, and corporate human resource and talent acquisition leaders, and 146 executive search firm consultants from a companion global survey. Findings indicate that networking is still (by far) the best way to open doors to new opportunities, as shown in their breakdown of where recruiters find executive candidates: 46% â€" networking 23% â€" the firms database 11% â€" research 10% â€" searching resume databases 8% â€" online job postings 2% â€" advertising Companies report that 92 percent of their jobs with salaries at or above $200,000 per year are not posted publicly online. This trend continues to increase as companies become overwhelmed by response to advertised positions because what is published on their websites is re-published by an increasing number of job ad aggregators. According to the report, employers most sought-after executive characteristics today are: Ability to build and lead high performance teams Industry-specific experience Leadership skills Strategy and execution leadership Change agent Whereas, recruiters hardest-to-find characteristics in executives stack up like this: Industry-specific experience Ability to build and lead high performance teams Strategy and execution leadership Leadership skills Functional/technical expertise Mark Anderson, ExecuNets President and Chief Economist, explained the implications: If you are changing industries or functions and want to be a change agent, the clear message is go direct to hiring companies and demonstrate your ability to build, mold, and motivate strong, high-performing teams. The report ends with the caution that an unplanned, unguided job search may lead to roadblocks and dead ends. Understanding how to chart the right course is critical. Whats most important for you to remember is that a solid business network and your work to proactively build it and cultivate relationships through it can put you on the road to opportunity. Some takeaways for job seekers - Earlier this week, I was interviewed for the Career Success Radio show with Andy and Carrie Robinson. I love doing interviews, because they always inspire me to write about something that came up in the discussion. In this case, Andy and Carrie asked me for some closing thoughts for their job seeking listeners to consider. How to sum up things for a job seeker in just a few minutes? For someone who writes (and tweets) about the topic daily, its a challenge to choose just a few topics. There are jobs. If you optimize your search and your materials, the economy will not keep you from finding a job. It is easy to think that the situation is out of your control as a job seeker. However, I believe that job seekers control a lot more than they realize. I like to suggest that my clients drive their own career bus. Do not ignore the power of social networking the connections you can make online are only limited by the amount of time you have to pursue them. You may be surprised to learn that people you hardly know are willing to connect and provide you with information and contacts that are key to landing your next opportunity. Job seekers who shrug off LinkedIn and Twitter do so at their own risk. Dont underestimate the importance of a positive attitude and planning your search. Job seekers must take the reigns and be focused and purposeful. In my experience working with clients, those who plan are successful and those who leave things to chance experience a much longer than necessary search period.   Finally, its important to ensure that your job search materials are up-to-date and optimized. Radiotopia's Roman Mars How 99% Invisible's Host Does Money Roman Mars started out in public radio, used Kickstarter to help make his show 99% Invisible a cult sensation, and leveraged that success into an entire podcasting network called Radiotopia. Now partnered with distributor PRX, he’s reinventing the way independent audio journalism gets made in the podcast era with a unique fundraising campaign that’s already attracted backing from thousands of fans. Mars is all about storytellingâ€"but he’s not afraid to talk money. He’s the first guest in our new “Talking Money” series. Given how important fund-raising has become to your career, does thinking about money take over your life? It kind of does. I wouldn’t call it a drawback of success â€" in a way, solving that problem is pretty interesting to me. But it does become more of my time: Making sure our producers and reporters have jobs. That can be really unnerving, because as a freelancer, my superpower was: “If this doesn’t work, I can always live on nothing.” Because I’d always lived on nothing. And what is the status of that superpower these days? I’ve lost some of my superpower, for sure. And you know, now I have kids. I actually make a car payment. Things like that. But the fact that I’m still thrifty makes me glad I came from where I did. My wife and I are total cheap dates. I don’t have a lot of desire for fancy things. And while I want Radiotopia to grow and have more of an audience, I just need it to be a good little businessâ€"I don’t need, like, startup-style growth, or have it be a media empire or something. All of that makes “the ask” easier for me. I was asked to do a talk for a private company recently. And I charge a lot for those thingsâ€"I’m really busy, so I make sure they’re worth my time. They said, “We don’t need your whole hour talk, just a half hour.” Well, that doesn’t make any difference to me. So I said: “You guys are doing pretty good. We’re independent artists, and I’ll tell you, if you devote your budget to people like me, you’ll feel good about how you spent your money.” They wrote back and said, “I like your spirit!” So I got the full fee. That’s pretty fearless. Yeah, but I’m fearless about it because I have ongoing support from the audience and advertisers. Two or three years ago, I would have been so desperate not to lose that talk that I wouldn’t negotiate. But I still have a real fear of debt. I’ve always been broke, but I’ve never been in debt. People who are really comfortable with money, and will probably be really rich some day, I have a feeling their relationship with debt is like, “That’s how you make money.” I do not have that. I don’t think I’ll ever own a house. I just can’t imagine it. And I know that’s wrong! Are you curious about other people’s money habits? My big thing was going from being a 1099 contractor to a business owner. I’m still not used to that. It’s an education I just don’t have â€" a financial education. I guess it’s the area of the world where I feel the most lost. So I wonder about how others handle that transition â€" do they just offload all of it? Or do they stay closely involved? Radiotopia was a project that I never expected to do as well as it has, it was never organized to be the thing that it is now. I have a feeling a lot of people are in situations like that. The funny thing is I’m often cast in this world as “the public radio business guy,” because I’ve learned how to raise money. That to me is so ridiculous. It’s a part of my life I find very uncomfortable and new. I mean, nobody says, “Well, I’m good at business â€" so I’m going to go into public radio!” This interview edited for length and clarity. Co-workers can be big distractions, and their distractions could place a damper on your productivity for the day. Decreasing the number of people around you will help to increase your productivity.
